Tennessee, Florida – Tennesse City Mayor Ronnie Cepeda told a crowd that the city had filed a lawsuit against the city of Tampa for $3 million in unpaid taxes.
Cepada made the comments during a press conference on Thursday.
“Tampa, we filed a suit in August and it is being contested in court,” he said.
“They’ve said they’ll take our money.
We have not heard back.
We don’t have the money.”
Cepeda did not provide any evidence to support his claims, nor did he mention the city’s lawsuit.
A city spokesman said the mayor’s comments were made after reviewing the city attorney’s response.
The city’s tax bill was about $5.6 million, according to a city spokeswoman.
CEPADA’s claim was denied by the city.
According to the city, it has filed more than 50 similar lawsuits against Tampa since 2014.
“We’re not just claiming the money, we’re also fighting back,” Cepede said.
“We are doing everything we can to fight them.”
